The Relationship between Smartphone Overdependence and Academic Helplessness of Nursing Students Experienced COVID-19: The Mediating Effects of Sleep Quality

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the relationship between smartphone overdependence and academic helplessness of nursing students experienced COVID-19, with a focus on the mediating effect of sleep quality. The study surveyed 153 nursing students experienced COVID-19. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS/WIN 25.0, and the mediating effect was analyzed through the SPSS PROCESS Macro Model 4. Smartphone overdependence (¥â=0.31, p<0.001) and sleep quality (¥â=0.42, p<0.001) were founded to be significant predictors of academic helplessness. In addition, sleep quality mediated the relationship between smartphone overdependence and academic helplessness (Effect=0.02, LLCI=0.01, ULCI=0.03). Smartphone overdependence and sleep quality were affect academic helplessness of nursing students experienced COVID-19 directly or indirectly. Finally, Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop and apply various programs for nursing students to prevent smartphone overdependence and to reduce academic helplessness.
